Microplastics and Polymers: Need for Nomenclature

Time: 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm

Date: 12 November

The problem of plastic pollution in the marine environment is a serious one.  While “microplastics” in personal care products are a popular target, a clear definition of a microplastic has not emerged. As a result, the use of INCI names to identify microplastics is now a troubling trend.  INCI names were never intended to be used this way and are poor substitutes for a clear definition. This misuse of INCI names has resulted in ingredients being identified as microplastics that pose no harm to marine environment. The solution to the microplastic problem must be scientifically based and fundamentally fair.
