As shampoo formulation is changing to accommodate more diverse hair textures, mitigating the effects of lipid removal from hair is an increasingly important aspect of daily shampoos. This is achieved primarily by the inclusion of conditioning agents and especially conditioning polymers like Polyquaternium-10, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, and others. Obtaining the desired impact from these additives can be difficult, as they will readily complex with anionic surfactants in the shampoo formulation and wash away instead of depositing as intended. Through the generation of coacervate complexes, the conditioning benefit of these polymers can be greatly enhanced. This talk will explore two different technologies which show promising results in enhancing the deposition of traditional polymeric quats. Their efficacy will be assessed by a variety of different means, culminating in instrumental measurement of comb force reduction in a model shampoo with and without the additives.
