How to... make a Fairtrade certified product and supply Fairtrade ingredients
Andrew Jones, Fair Venture Consulting (Consultant for Fairtrade Foundation)
The Fairtrade Foundation launched the Fairtrade Cosmetics and Personal Care policy in June 2009. Cosmetics companies can now apply to use the Fairtrade Mark on products that meet the requirements of this policy. This opens up the market for the cosmetics industry to be involved in Fairtrade and thereby increases the benefits to Fairtrade producers. Already nearly 100 products from 6 companies have Fairtrade certification.
The presentation will give details of the requirements of the policy and the opportunities to develop Fairtrade certified products. Information about Fairtrade ingredients and supply chains will be presented as well as the potential to increase the availability and diversity of Fairtrade ingredients so that more products can be certified.
Examples of trading partnership plans between companies and Fairtrade producers will be used to illustrate how Fairtrade certification not only means a “fair price” but also how longer term trading relationships can help support producers in a variety of ways.
